The giant sycamore was Thomas "Bigfoot" Spencer's winter home in the Castalian Springs area of Sumner County in 1779. The home of William Joyner on Hernando Pike was outside the Memphis city limits and not subject to the city's "no dueling" law. In the 1800s men met in a nearby grove to defend their honor; many died in the home's front parlor.
The Heritage Tree Registry honors trees that are no longer standing.
