Ceremonies commemorating Arbor Day in Tennessee are set for Centennial Park in Nashville March 2 at 11 a.m. State and local representatives will make remarks, read the official proclamation and present Tree City and Treeline USA awards.
Co-sponsor Metro Nashville Beautification and Environment Committee will plant three memorial trees and present awards for Arbor Day essays. The celebration is held annually in the city of TUFC's tree board of the year, which was Metro Tree Advisory Committee in 2011.
The state Division of Forestry planted a tulip poplar in memory of Clint Strohmeier, the Division's forest health specialist who died in 2011.
The chapter conducted the inaugural Urban Forestry Advisor class with 10 students. It also did educational outreach at the Master Gardener Show, Shelby Farms Park Earth Day, Memphis Botanic Garden Fall Garden show, Ames Plantation Heritage Festival, and Dixon Arboretum Recertification Celebration.
Four members completed a non-native invasive plants workshop taught by Mississippi State University. Others volunteered at the Overton Park Cleanup on National Public Lands Day and Shelby Farms Park Tree Nursery Maintenance Day.
The group is coordinating with Shelby Farms Park and the Wolf River Conservancy on a spring tree planting project working to make Memphis a Tree City USA.

TUFC board member Dwight Barnett was named Division Forester of the Year by the state Department of Agriculture's Division of Forestry.
The annual award was for exemplifying the highest level of professionalism serving the citizens and forest landowners of the state.
“The citizens of Tennessee are fortunate to have such a dedicated individual working to improve the sustainability and quality of our forests,” said state forester Steven Scott. MORE
